Just when you think football seems so far away, here is news to get you thinking about football once again. The College Football Playoff committee has approved thier final revisions to the new 5-7 format for the new 12-team playoff.
Last season there was a lot of controversy over Florida State not making it into the playoff, and even some rumblings about Georgia not making it in. Florida State went undefeated and won their conference, but the Committee felt that the injury to Jordan Travis affected the team too much to where they weren't the same Seminole team, so they did not make it in. Georgia was at the top of the rankings all season, but after losing to Alabama by three points in the SEC Championship, they found themselves on the outside looking in.
This new format is supposed to aid in making sure those controversies are rectified.
What this new format means is that there will be five automatic bids for the playoff, like March Madness, where the five conference champions will have thier spot in the playoffs. Now for the remaining seven spots, those will go to the next seven best teams.
What this allows is teams like Georgia that might have gone undefeated in the regular season, but fell short in the conference championship to still have their chance to make it in. It also means that just because a team might have two losses doesn't mean they have no chance of making it in.
Now why does this matter for Kansas State fans? Well, with new competition in the Big 12 this next season, the Wildcats have a better chance at making it into the playoffs. Getting into the conference championship could mean a ticket to the playoffs. Yes, of course, teams want to win the conference title, but being the second-best team in the conference can also pay off big time.
