Week 1 is in the books and college football is back in full swing.
Week 1 was a mix of games that shouldn't have been as close as they were and games that were blowouts that no one expected to be.
Georgia showed up this week and showed why they are ranked No. 1 in the country, Penn State showed that Drew Allar is for real, and Michigan surprised everyone with who their starting quarterback is.
Week 1 was nothing short of amazing and even if your team lost, you have to simply be happy that football is back adn it's not going anywhere until 2025.
The College Football Playoff will now have 12 teams this year, with the four Power Four conference winners getting automatic bids and first-round byes, a Group of Five Champion, and then the next seven highest-ranked teams. This new format allows for more teams to get in, even if they have one, two, or maybe even three losses.
So here is my prediction of how the CFP will look at the end of next season after Week 1.
Rank | Team | Why are they here | Previous ranking |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Georgia | SEC champion | 1 |
2 | Ohio State | Big Ten champion | 2 |
3 | Utah | Big 12 champion | 11 |
4 | Miami | ACC champion | N/A |
5 | Oregon | At-large | 3 |
6 | Texas | At-large | 5 |
7 | Alabama | At-large | 7 |
8 | Missouri | At-large | 9 |
9 | Notre Dame | At-large | 10 |
10 | Michigan | At-large | 8 |
11 | Kansas State | At-large | 6 |
12 | Boise State | MW champion | 12 |
There is only one new face in the rankings this week and that is Miami, who put a beat down on the Florida Gators in the Swamp in Week 1. After Florida State's Week 0 loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland, the Seminoles opened the door for Miami to walk right in and become the favorite to win the ACC, giving them the auto-bid to the playoff.
There was some moving around in these rankings with Kansas State and Utah switching places as the Big 12 champion and the at-large bid. bot teams struggled early in their Week 1 matchup, but Utah turned it on faster and better than K-State did, earning them the Big 12 title so far.
The SEC still has four teams in with Alabama staying put and Missouri moving a spot up after a more dominant win than people would have thought. Michigan also feels as if it seems like Sherrone Moore made some questionable moves by not starting Alex Orji in their season opener.
This just goes to show that one week can change a lot for teams, and this was just Week 1, we still have an entire season to go.
