The Kansas State women’s basketball team’s season ended after a Big 12 Tournament loss to the TCU Horned Frogs in Kansas City – until it wasn’t. On Sunday night, it was announced the Wildcats' season will continue.
K-State was announced as a selection into the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament, better known as the WBIT.
Kansas State women’s basketball earns WBIT Tournament selection
Kansas State is one of 32 teams in the field, selected as a No. 2 seed and handed an opening-round game against Georgia Tech.
K-State closed the Big 12 Tournament with improbable comebacks against both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. In the second round against the Red Raiders, they scored 21 unanswered points.
They ended the regular season with an 8-10 record in conference play before decimating Cincinnati 91-66 in their opening draw. Their season came to an abrupt end after a 12-point loss in the semifinal round.
Postseason play is a major bonus for the young Wildcats squad.
The current Kansas State roster has six freshmen, including standout Jordan Speiser along with Brandie Harrod, Aniya’ Foy, Gina Garcia, Alexis Hess and Ivona Scekic. A handful of seasoned veterans are also expected to play, including senior Tess Heal and junior Taryn Sides.
It’s the type of draw that will allow head coach Jeff Mittie to evaluate for next season, and add to his already stacked coaching resume.
