Kansas State baseball stays red-hot, tears apart the Michigan Wolverines early

For the fourth time in their first seven games, Kansas State baseball tallied 10 runs, taking down the Michigan Wolverines 10-6, avenging Friday's loss against Auburn.

Exactly one year after their last matchup, Kansas State baseball ran into the Michigan Wolverines in the final game of this weekend's Amegy Bank College Baseball Series in Arlington. It was back-and-forth, but the Wildcats scored early and held on to win 10-6.

Fireworks start in second inning with seven runs

After a first inning stalemate, the Wolverines pieced together a two-out rally to strike first on the scoreboard. Joe Longo laced a double down the right field line, which was followed by a Grant Gallagher throwing error and an RBI double by Greg Pace Jr. to give Michigan a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats responded with their own crooked number in the bottom of the second. After back-to-back walks by Shintaro Inoue and Grant Gallagher to start the inning, Kurt Barr threw away a pitch to put Inoue and Gallagher in scoring position. Micah Kendrick capitalized on the scoring chance, driving in both runners with a double and extending his hit streak to three games.

Bear Madliak followed up with a booming drive down the left field line, but it was ruled just foul. He straightened his swing and snuck a single down the middle of the infield to score Kendrick, and immediately caught Kurt Barr napping and stole a base on the following pitch. Barr was then substituted by David Lally Jr.

The pitching woes continued for the Wolverines, as Lally Jr. was immediately called for a balk to advance the runner to third, then threw a wild pitch to allow the fourth run of the frame. Dee Kennedy soon followed with the cherry on top, lacing a solo homer to give Kansas State a 5-2 lead.

Wildcats run up the score again in the fourth

Maintaining a three-run lead with a 6-3 score, Kansas State fired up the offense again in the fourth frame. Ty Smolinski drew a leadoff walk on four pitches, which chased David Lally Jr. from the game. Slade Moore took over on the mound for Michigan but failed to record an out. Robby Bolin got hit by a pitch to extend his on-base streak to seven games and scored on a Dee Kennedy RBI single.

AJ Evasco increased his on-base streak to seven games with a two-run single to make the tally 9-3. This was the last of Slade Moore, who was replaced by Max Debiec before the end of the inning.

Michigan strikes back in the seventh

Kansas State coach Pete Hughes rolled the dice by keeping Lincoln Sheffield on the mound to start the seventh inning, and the Wolverines made them pay. After Cade Ladehoff singled and made his way to third base, Brenden Stressler drove him in on an RBI single.

Colby Turner followed up with a two-run homer that hit off the second deck of seats in left field, cutting the Wildcat advantage back down to three at 9-6. Sheffield's night ended as he was pulled for Cohen Feser.

Carlos Vasquez and Cohen Feser seal the game

Following his four RBI night against Nebraska, Carlos Vasquez turned on a pitch toward the outer half of the plate and lined it over the left field wall to give Kansas State a 10-6 advantage.

Cohen Feser stayed on the hill for the final seven outs and collected the first save of the year for Kansas State. Through the first two weekends of action, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 73-36.
