The K-State baseball team entered the Sunflower Showdown with high hopes but will need to regroup after being swept in Lawrence over the weekend.

The Wildcats dropped the opener 5-3 on Friday night, squandering a late lead. Things didn’t improve in Saturday’s doubleheader, as K-State fell 6-3 in the first game and 6-5 in the second.

In Game 1 on Saturday, a solo home run by Sam Flores gave the Wildcats an early lead, but the Jayhawks stormed back to go up 4-3 by the fourth inning. RBI singles from Dariel Osoria and Brooks extended Kansas’ lead in the fifth.

Cooper Moore (4-1) pitched eight strong innings for KU, allowing six hits and three runs to earn the win. Alex Breckheimer picked up his fourth save of the season. K-State’s Lincoln Sheffield (5-4) went four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits to take the loss.

In Game 2, Kansas scored in each of the first four innings, including a three-run fourth, to secure the win. K-State showed fight, taking leads in the top of the second and fourth innings, but gave them up each time.

In the ninth, a sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 6-5, but the game ended on a diving catch in center field with the go-ahead run at the plate. Thaniel Trumper earned the win for KU, while Eric Lin collected his fourth save. JJ Slack (1-3) pitched two innings for K-State, surrendering four hits and three runs to take the loss.

Kansas State (23-17, 10-8 Big 12) now sits sixth in the Big 12 standings. Kansas (31-10 overall, 12-6 Big 12) moves into a tie for second place with Arizona and TCU.

The sweep marked the Jayhawks’ first over the Wildcats since 2019.
