Joe Klanderman was brought to Kansas State in 2020 to replace Hazelton after his departure for Michigan State. Something has worked out with Klanderman because he still holds the position under head coach Chris Klieman.

In his first season, Kalnderman struggled, but many people look at the 2020 season with an asterisk next to it due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortened season, and many players opting out. Taking out the 2020 season where the defense allowed over 400 total yards per game, Klanderman's unit has not allowed over 380 total yards in three seasons.

Klanderman also has a first-round draft pick under his belt with Felix Anudike-Uzomah being drafted with the 31st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Klanderman's Achilles heel is the run game, but the defensive line has always been able to get the quarterback and the secondary finds ways to shut down receivers. In 2023, the Wildcats averaged almost two turnovers a game.

Klanderman will have his work cut out for him in 2024 with a lot fo the defense hitting the transfer portal, but if he can continue these numbers, he can stick around as long as he would like.
