Big 12 basketball standings by leading scorers
Each team has a player that they would trust with the last shot in a tie game with one second left. For me, I am always trusting the leading scorer for the team. They know how to knock down a shot in pressure situations and stay calm, cool, and collected.
Two weeks into conference play, certain players are starting to emerge as true leading scorers. Here are the rankings of each Big 12 team by their leading scorer.
Kevin McCullar Jr.
The Kansas Jayhawks have run the Big 12 for as long as I can remember. They are a blue blood in college basketball and Bill Self knows how to get the top recruits. So it is no surprise they are ranked No. 1 on this list.
Kevin McCullar Jr. is just barely leading his teammate Hunter Dickinson as the top scorer for the Jayhawks. the senior is averaging 19.8 points a game in 17 games. He has a total of 336 points so far on the season with 26 three-pointers.
Max Abmas
The Longhorns are currently in their last season in the Big 12 before they leave for the SEC in July. They won the Big 12 Championship last season and were upset in the Elite Eight by 16-seed Miami.
Max Abmas is averaging 17.9 points per game in 16 games for the Longhorns. He has 286 points on the season, which is tied with UCF's Jaylin Sellers who will appear later on this list, Abmas has 53 three-pointers on the season, which edges out Sellers.
Jaylin Sellers
The UCF Knights are playing their first season in the Big 12. A team that has struggled since their 2019 March Madness run, the Knights hope that joining the basketball powerhouse that is the Big 12 will help jumpstart their program again.
This is Jaylin Sellers' first year with UCF. The junior guard spent two years with Ball State before joining Johnny Dawkins in Orlando. Sellers is averaging 17.9 points per game with 286 points on the season, sinking 25 three-pointers for the Knights.
Cam Carter
The Wildcats are in their second season under Jerome Tang. The former Baylor coach just took down his former boss as K-State took down the No. 9 ranked team. K-State is looking to return to the Elite Eight in March Madness, this time with hopes to move on.
Cam Carter came into the 2023-2024 season as the only returning starter from the Elite Eight team. Carter is averaging 16.6 games for the Wildcats in 17 games for the Wildcats. He has 283 points on the season with 33 three-pointers.
Emanuel Miller
TCU's leading scorer is Emanuel Miller, who is averaging 16.6 points per game in 16 games. Miller has 283 points on the season, tied with Carter, but he only has 17 three-pointers on the season. Miller is a senior forward for the Horned Frogs, spending his entire career at TCU.
Pop Issacs
Pop Issacs is averaging 16.1 points per game in 16 games. The young sophomore guard currently has 273 points on the season and is already about to surpass his total points from his freshman year. Issacs has made 39 three-pointers on the year.
LJ Cryer
For a team that has been consistently in the rankings for quite some time, it surprises me that their leading scorer is not higher on this list. LJ Cryer is averaging 15.2 points per game in 17 games for the Cougars. Cryer spent three years at Baylor and ended up right back in the Big 12 with Houston. He has 258 points on the season with 50 three-pointers.
Javian McCollum
Javian McCollum made the move to the Big 12 conference from Siena where he spent two seasons. In his first season with the Sooners, McCollum is the leading scorer averaging 14.9 points per game in 17 games. The junior guard has 253 points so far this season with 39 three-pointers.
Ja'Kobe Walter
Ja'Kobe Walter is in his first season with Baylor as a freshman. It is pretty impressive to be leading the team in scoring as a freshman. Walter is averaging 14.8 points per game in 17 games for the Bears, who are the second-ranked offense in the Big 12. The freshman guard has 252 points on the season with an 35 three-pointers in an offense that thrives on the three-point shot.
Tamin Lipsey
Tamin Lipsey is currently the leading scorer for the Cyclones, however, he did suffer a shoulder injury against BYU on Tuesday. The sophomore guard is currently day-to-day, but he is averaging 14.5 games in 17 games for the Cyclones. He has 246 points on the season, which is just 13 points shy of total points in his freshman season where he played 33 games.
Jaxon Robinson
Jaxson Robinson is in his second year with BYU, but this is his third school, starting at Texas A&M, moving to Arkansas, and then settling at BYU. The senior guard is averaging 14.3 points on season in 16 games. He has 229 points with 42 three-pointers.
Quinn Slazinski
Quinn Slazinski is in his first season with West Virginia after spending two seasons at Iona and Louisville for two seasons before that. Slazinksi is averaging 14.1 points per game in his first 17 games with the Mountaineers. He currently has 240 points on the season with 25 three-pointers.
Javon Small
Javon Small spent two years in a group of five conferences before stepping up to a Power Five in his junior year. Small is averaging 14.0 points per game in his first 16 games with the Cowboys. He has 224 points with 34 three-pointers.
Viktor Lakhin
The Cincinnati Bearcats are currently sitting in the middle of the pack of the Big 12 for basketball. Their leading scorer Viktor Lakhin is currently averaging 13.5 points a game in 17 games. The junior forward has 229 points with 14 three-points on the season.
