The transfer portal is shaping up well for first-year head coach Casey Alexander and Kansas State men's basketball. After losing eight players ahead of the portal, the eighth replacement just landed in Manhattan.
Kansas State adds eighth transfer portal addition Montana Wheeler
Kansas State is another man up, and the Bradley Braves are one down with the exit of mid-major star guard Montana Wheeler. In his first and only season, he didn't disappoint.
Wheeler ended his freshman campaign averaging 8.5 points, 2.8 assists and 1.1 rebounds per game. Against Alexander's Belmont team, he put up a combined 28 points in two conference games. Wheeler scored 22 points in 26 minutes against the Bruins in early January, hitting seven threes and finishing the game 63.9% from the floor.
Bradley went on to lose in the semifinal round of the Misssouri Valley Conference tournament to the eventual NCAA-qualifying Northern Iowa Panters. They appeared in the NIT, a game that saw Wheeler score 10 points against Dayton.
Everything Wheeler brings to Kansas State men's basketball
Wheeler joins the Wildcats as another young addition with similar experiences to Kansas State's lone returner, Andrej Kostic. Both are entering their sophomore seasons at different positions, Wheeler a guard and Kostic a forward.
Should they see the floor at the same time, there's a good chance they develop something special in the front court. It's worth noting, hwoever, that Kostic spent the majority of last season playing off the bench, and could see a similar role in 2026.
Should he start, Wheeler will have to stand out among other transfer guards, including Virginia Tech transfer Jaden Schutt, former 4-star Brandon Rechsteiner from Colorado State and Oregon transfer Dezdrick Lindsay.
Other transfers at the forward position include Brock Vice (Murray State), Matt Gilhool (LSU) and Isaiah Abraham (Georgetown). Redshirt junior center JT Rock is also on that list.
