Kansas State has not had running back Dylan Edwards on the field since the first punt return of the season against Iowa State two weeks ago. On the return, Edwards muffed the punt, and then his ankle was rolled up on, resulting in an ankle injury that kept him out the rest of that game and the Wildcats' matchup against North Dakota last week.
Now with the Wildcats taking on Army today, Edwards has officially been ruled out for the matchup due to the continued ankle injury. The announcement was made this morning by Pete Thamel and then again on ESPN College Gameday.
This is a huge loss for Kansas State, which really struggled with the run game last week against North Dakota. Backup running back Joe Jackson has picked up the run game as best as he can, but Edwards was really the workhorse in that position.

The game against Army will be won in the trenches today, so the run game will have to be there for the Wildcats. Jackson will have to come out looking his best, but head coach Chris Klieman will have to get quarterback Avery Johnson using his legs as well.
The run game will be able to open more in the passing game for Johnson, but being a dual-threat quarterback is so crucial to Johnson's game. With the absence of Edwards, Johnson being able to run is so big for Kansas State, and Klieman needs to take advantage of that.
Kansas State can't take the chance of getting behind early against Army like they did against North Dakota last week. Playing catch-up with Army will not be as easy as it was against North Dakota last week, so the Wildcats need to set the tone early in order to feel like they can play comfortably.
There is hope that Edwards will be back for Kansas State's matchup against Arizona this next week on Friday. With a shorter week, Edwards being out today will hopefully give him a little more time to be ready for the battle of the Wildcats. Klieman has said that good progress is being made on the injury and things are looking up.
