Kansas State fans who aren't Kansas City Chiefs fans were smiling this weekend, watching one of their former players make a big play. Former tight end Ben Sinnott had not seen a lot of time on the field this season with the Washington Commanders, as the rookie was on a squad littered with stars, especially at the tight end position.
Sinnott was listed as the third-string tight end for the Commanders behind legend Zach Ertz and John Bates. Ertz and Bates have been receiving most of the targets this season from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, but Sinnott was able to snag a few as well.
During the 2024 season, Sinnott was targeted five times and caught all five passes totaling 28 yards. Unfortunately, Sinnott also had two fumbles this season, which could have resulted in a little less playing time. However, in the NFC Championship game, the former Wildcat made a big play that had Kansas State fans smiling.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has been known to take some risks, going for it on fourth down more than 60% of the time, the highest percentage of any team in the NFL. In a time when the Commanders needed some life, Quinn made it seem like the Commanders were going to give the ball back to the Philadelphia Eagles but instead called up a trick play for Sinnott that was executed perfectly.
Commanders punter Tress Way threw a perfect pass to Sinnott, who caught it for the first down conversion on the fake punt trick play. Every Kansas State fan watching the game probably jumped out of their seats at the site of Sinnott making a big play in such a big game.
This could vault Sinnott into a bigger role going into the 2025 season, especially with Ertz's one-year contract coming to an end. The Commanders ended up falling to the Eagles 55-23, thus ending Sinnott's rookie season.
