Weber, Kansas State Round 2 Against Underwood
By Stan Unruh
The Kansas State Wildcats play one of the hottest teams in the Big 12 conference on Wednesday. Brad Underwood wants to even the score with Bruce Weber.
On January 18, the Kansas State Wildcats outplayed Oklahoma State in the second half and won 96-88. The most points they have scored all season.
It was a huge road win for the ‘Cats and especially for Bruce Weber against former Wildcat player and assistant Brad Underwood.
On Wednesday, Underwood will make first trip back to his alma-mater as a visiting head coach.
It’s no secret some Wildcat fans covet Underwood. The talk started again after the ‘Cats lost at Bramlage to Iowa State last week.
When Kansas State ended last season with a 22-point loss in the Big 12 Tournament and no post season play, some fans were so disappointed, they wanted big changes to the program.
A few fans wanted Underwood to replace Weber.
Underwood is a 1986 graduate of Kansas State, where he played for Jack Hartman. He is also a former Kansas State Assistant coach.
As coach at Stephen F Austin, Underwood earned national attention for his team’s play.
You may remember Underwood’s “Lumberjacks upset #5 VCU in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Then in 2016 as Underwood’s Basketball camp website described it, “they took down No. 3 seed West Virginia in the first round. In fact, the Lumberjacks came within two seconds of a trip to the Sweet 16.”
Oklahoma State knew what they wanted in a head coach. They fired Travis Ford and hired Underwood.

Some Wildcats were disappointed that they would now have to battle Underwood in Big 12 play.
Bruce Weber won the first meeting last month. At the time, the Wildcats had not won in Stillwater since 2012 and Oklahoma State had yet to win a Big 12 game.
The Cowboys have now won four straight Big 12 road games, and eight of their last nine games overall.
Kansas State is coming off a big road win against an inferior Texas team. I think Bruce Weber’s guys will step up to defend the home court.
