Jug Of News (06.14.12)

Welcome to our humble abode. Pull up a seat and grab a glass for a sip from today’s Jug of News. Hit the jump for a sneak preview of Brady Bauman’s new column posting later this morning, a couple K-State footballers who are flying under the radar, Rodney McGruder has taken quickly to new coach Bruce Weber, and more.

If you follow us on Twitter, you know that we’ve added a new writer to the JOS staff. Yesterday I posted a sneak preview of Brady’s first column. Somehow, Brady weaves together a deformed goat, time travel, Bill Snyder, and the Bubonic plague. It’s worth and read, and will post at 7:00 AM today.

Erstwhile ESPN blogger David Ubben took a look yesterday at who K-State football’s most under-the-radar player might be. He couldn’t make up his mind, so he honored both running back John Hubert and defensive end Meshak Williams.

Topeka Capital-Journal beat writer Austin Meek has an interesting article on how Rodney McGruder is growing more and more comfortable with new head coach Bruce Weber. In it, he mentions that Frank Martin actually called Rodney after he took the job with South Carolina. While nothing Meek writes directly supports what JOS learned (and reported) about Martin’s departure, read what Rodney says very closely. I’ll put it this way: what he doesn’t say is even more illuminating that what he does say.

On a lighter basketball note, season ticket packages for head coach Deb Patterson’s Lady Cats were announced yesterday. The team is coming off a strong season, in which they advanced to the round of 32, before losing to the perennial powerhouse UConn Huskies.

Finally, K-State golf alum Aaron Watkins tees off at the U.S. Open today. The event is being held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. Watkins’ tee time is set for 12:30 PM.
