The Kansas State Wildcat Women’s team is playing some outstanding basketball. What they did on last week’s road trip to Texas shouldn’t be overlooked.

Jeff Mittie’s team opened a tough, Texas road trip in Lubbock on February 1. With four players scoring in double figures the ‘Cats rolled past Texas Tech 65-53. Senior Breanna Lewis contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

The win was important but what they accomplished a couple of days later may be more impressive.

They did everything but win at nationally ranked Texas 63-58. Just another loss? No, a loss to one of the best teams in the nation.

Jeff Mittie’s team scared the Longhorns from the opening tip. Kansas State opened with a 6-0 run thanks to layups from Breanna Lewis and Kindred Weseman to force a Texas timeout two minutes into the game.

In fact Kansas State went on scoring runs to start all four quarters. The 21 points from Wesemann helped the Wildcats rally to tie the Longhorns three times with under five minutes to play. She converted a three-point play on a layup and free throw, then knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:54 left to even the game at 57.

It wasn’t enough to win but it was enough to show just how good this team really is.

Two days later, Texas upset #2 Baylor. The Longhorns dominated the Lady Bears and now boast the second-best active win streak in the NCAA with 17 and hold a perfect 13-0 record in Big 12 Conference play.

Jeff Mittie’s Wildcats lost in Austin but they should understand how good this team can be.

In addition to a strong bench, the Kansas State senior duo of Lewis and Wesemann are tough.

Lewis leads the team in points 14.3 and rebounds 8.3. Wesemann is second on the team in points 13.9 and paces the team in three-point field goals made and attempted 65-of-187, .366, according to a media release from Kansas State Athletics.

Kansas State needs to win big over Iowa State this weekend and finish the regular season strong. The sky is the limit for this team in post-season play.
