Dear Frank,

How’s it going, friend? I haven’t heard from you in awhile! Congrats on becoming a Cock (giggle…giggle). I meant to say Gamecock—really I did. I’ve been missing the old days lately: Serving you at Carlos O’ Kelly’s during the coach’s show, watching you go at it with Nick Wright on 610, and even high-fiving you at Allen Fieldhouse, right before getting taken to the woodshed by KU.

John Currie is a man on the move. The Kansas State athletic director has had few opportunities to slow down in the weeks since Frank Martin exited stage left on the way to South Carolina. In an interview with SiriusXM Sports, Currie talked about how he was able to oversee a revitalization of the K-State athletic department, which saw it go from a $2.8 million shortfall to a profit of over $23 million in three short years.

Frank Martin is surrounded by a cult of personality.

The news media fetes him, his subordinates do not dare contradict him, and any player who dares stand up against his bully-boy tactics is belittled in terms that would make Mark Mangino blush. As his tenure as basketball coach at Kansas State wound down, the rumors swirled: mass player defections, a rift with the athletic director, the aforementioned Mangino-like treatment of the players. Martin is on the record, claiming that he “didn’t run” from his problems at K-State. That is not true. He did run. And he “got while the getting was good”, as the saying goes. This is a look at the last days of Frank Martin as K-State’s head men’s basketball coach. They were not the best of times.

It’s time to get things started for the K-State men’s basketball team and tonight they open the season at home in the Octagon of Doom against Charleston Southern. This season begins as an enigma with there not being any real clear indications of how the team might end up. The preseason Big 12 coaches poll put the Wildcats at 6th. Coming off an NCAA tournament appearance that seems a bit harsh but when you throw in the general turmoil that came during the offseason with plenty of players bailing out of Coach Martin’s program it’s pretty understandable. The usual suspects are known. Expect to see Martavious Irving, Rodney McGruder, Jordan Henriquez, and Will Spradling start the game. There’s no need to rehash what those guys bring to the table (and other sites have done it way better already) but continue reading to get a quick blurb about all the new players that have been added to the roster. (more…)
