OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Kansas State junior left-hander Joe Flattery was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after tossing the Wildcats’ first nine-inning complete game in three years, the conference office announced Monday.

Flattery, a transfer from Iowa Central CC, earned his first-career Big 12 weekly honor, while it was the third by the Wildcats in as many weeks. Jared King was named player of the week on May 7, while Wade Hinkle followed with another citation last week. Jake Brownwas also named player of the week on March 12.

Flattery led the way for K-State last Friday as the Wildcats punched their ticket to the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 5-1 victory at Texas Tech. Flattery, who held a shutout until two outs in the ninth, allowed just six hits and walked one batter while he struck out five. Additionally, the Fort Dodge, Iowa, product limited Texas Tech – a team that was second in the league in hitting entering the weekend – to just a .188 batting average.

The junior-college transfer tallied K-State’s first complete game since 2009 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year A.J. Morris went the distance in the 2009 NCAA Regional at Rice. It was Flattery’s first victory in Big 12 play, and he bettered his previous season-long outing against a conference opponent by 2.1 innings.
